They need to preserve useful data, explain what is happening, recover from interruptions and handle transactions safely. This Android development course teaches Kotlin developers to build connected, offline-first apps with REST APIs, Room, WorkManager, secure authentication, location services, notifications and mobile money integration patterns. Learners apply these skills to commerce and field-service workflows that reflect regional connectivity, data-cost and payment realities. The result is an Android portfolio project that can continue serving users when the network slows down or disappears.

    Separate UI, data and optional domain responsibilities.

    Define repositories and data sources with stable interfaces.Model UI state and one-way event flow with ViewModel, coroutines and Flow.

    Understand endpoints, methods, headers, status codes, JSON and pagination.

    Build a typed API client and map network models into app models.Handle timeouts, authentication failures, rate limits and user-friendly error messages.

    Implement registration, sign-in, sign-out and token refresh flows.

    Keep provider secrets out of the Android app and store user credentials safely.Design secure role-aware navigation and session-expiry behaviour.

    Room as the local source of truth

    Cache network data in Room and observe it reactively from Compose.

    Design entity relationships, database migrations and data-mapping boundaries.Present cached content immediately while background refresh occurs.

    Offline-first synchronisation with WorkManager

    Queue important reads and writes when connectivity is unavailable.

    Apply network constraints, unique work, retries and exponential backoff.Detect conflicts, communicate sync status and prevent duplicate transactions.

    Understand payment initiation, customer approval, callbacks and transaction status.

    Connect the app to a secure backend or gateway sandbox instead of exposing private provider credentials.Design pending, successful, failed, cancelled and reversed payment experiences.

    Request location only when it supports a clear user benefit.

    Add maps, service-area logic or delivery-location capture.Use push notifications for order, appointment, payment or field-task updates.

    Reliability testing and regional capstone

    Test repositories, API responses, database behaviour and offline-to-online recovery.

    Profile data usage and verify behaviour on slow, interrupted and changing networks.Build an offline-first East African Marketplace app with secure sign-in, product data, mobile money sandbox checkout and sync status.

Before you enroll

  • Working knowledge of Kotlin, including classes, interfaces, collections, null safety and coroutines.
  • Ability to build a multi-screen Jetpack Compose app with navigation, ViewModel and local storage.
  • Completion of “Android App Development with Kotlin & Jetpack Compose in Uganda” or equivalent practical experience.
  • Basic understanding of HTTP requests and JSON is helpful; the Android implementation is covered in the course.
  • Access to a Git repository and an Android device or emulator.

  • Android Studio, Android SDK and the bundled JDK.
  • Kotlin, Jetpack Compose and Material 3.
  • Coroutines, Flow and lifecycle-aware state collection.
  • Room, DataStore and WorkManager.
  • Retrofit or Ktor Client for networking, plus a JSON serialisation library.
  • An API testing client such as Postman, Bruno or Insomnia.
  • Git and a Git repository.
  • An instructor-provided REST API or approved public development API.
  • A mobile money provider sandbox or instructor-provided payment simulation.
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging or an instructor-provided notification environment.
  • Android Emulator and at least one physical Android device for connectivity testing.
