Program Introduction
Start coding with Ruby through a practical beginner course created for learners in Uganda and relevant across East Africa and Africa. Ruby is a readable, object-oriented programming language that helps new developers concentrate on logic and problem-solving instead of complicated syntax. You will begin with installation and your first program, then progress through data types, decisions, collections, loops, methods, debugging and file handling. Hands-on exercises use relatable examples such as Uganda shilling calculations, small-business stock, daily sales and personal expenses. By completing the course project, you will be able to turn a simple real-world problem into a working command-line Ruby program. This is a language-first course and does not include Android development or Ruby on Rails.
Key Features & Benefits
• Beginner-friendly Ruby lessons with no previous coding experience required. • Step-by-step coding practice using the official Ruby language and IRB. • Uganda- and Africa-relevant exercises involving money, sales, records and everyday decisions. • Short practice tasks that reinforce every major Ruby concept. • Error-reading and debugging skills introduced from the beginning. • A portfolio-ready command-line Ruby capstone project. • Language-only learning with no Android development or web framework dependency. • Free or open-source development tools.
Real-World Applications
Learners can use the skills from this course to:
• Write simple calculators for prices, discounts, budgets and Uganda shilling transactions. • Create command-line tools for small-shop inventory or daily sales records. • Organise student marks, attendance or training records. • Build personal expense and savings trackers. • Clean and summarise small lists of community, survey or business data. • Automate repetitive text and file tasks on a computer. • Prepare for intermediate Ruby programming, object-oriented programming and software development studies. • Demonstrate basic coding ability in an entry-level project portfolio.
Course outline and learning expectations

What you will learn
- By the end of this beginner Ruby programming course, the learner will be able to:
- Explain what the Ruby programming language is and where it can be used in Uganda, East Africa and Africa.
- Install Ruby, use Interactive Ruby (IRB) and run Ruby programs from the command line.
- Write valid Ruby code using variables, constants, comments, operators and expressions.
- Work confidently with strings, numbers, booleans, `nil`, symbols, arrays, hashes and ranges.
- Accept user input and display clear program output.
- Use conditional statements and loops to solve practical problems.
- Organise reusable logic with methods, parameters, return values and variable scope.
- Process collections with common Ruby iterators such as `each`, `map`, `select` and `reduce`.
- Read from and write to local files using Ruby.
- Find and correct common syntax, runtime and logic errors.
- Build a complete command-line Ruby project for a practical African use case.
