Learn SQL from scratch with a practical beginner course created for learners in Uganda and relevant across East Africa and Africa. SQL is the language used to retrieve, organise, update, and summarise information stored in relational databases. In this course, you will learn how to write clear SQL queries, filter records, calculate totals, group results, combine tables, and safely change data.

Every topic includes guided practice using familiar African contexts such as retail sales, SACCO membership, agriculture, education, health services, mobile money merchants, and NGO programmes. You do not need previous coding or database experience. The course focuses entirely on the SQL language and the thinking required to answer real questions with data. It does not teach Python, Excel, Power BI, application development, or database administration.

By completing the lessons, exercises, and final project, you will build a strong SQL foundation for further learning and for entry-level work involving data, reports, software, or business information.

  • Write `SELECT` statements to retrieve specific data from a relational database.
  • Filter and sort records with `WHERE`, comparison operators, logical operators, `ORDER BY`, and `LIMIT`.
  • Remove duplicate results, rename output columns, and create calculated columns.
  • Work correctly with text, numbers, dates, Boolean values, and `NULL`.
  • Summarise business and programme data with `COUNT`, `SUM`, `AVG`, `MIN`, `MAX`, `GROUP BY`, and `HAVING`.
  • Combine related tables with `INNER JOIN` and `LEFT JOIN` to answer practical questions.
  • Create simple tables and safely add, update, and delete records with SQL.
