Program Introduction

Introduction

By Grade 5, learners move from playing with code to engineering with it. They uncover what happens inside a computer—CPU, memory, storage—and see how data, networks and emerging tech like AI fit together. Armed with this systems view, they design and build more sophisticated software or hardware projects, often in text‑based Python, and learn to communicate and collaborate online safely.

Key Features & Benefits

Key Features – What learners will study

  • Inside the Machine

    • Conceptual tour of CPU, RAM, storage; high‑level fetch‑execute cycle role‑play.
    • Data representation: binary, ASCII, file sizes (bytes → MB).
  • Algorithms & Programming

    • Draft pseudocode/flowcharts for multi‑step tasks.
    • Transition from Scratch to Python: input/output, variables, if/else, loops, simple lists.
    • Structured debugging strategies and version control basics (save iterations).
  • Networking & Internet Literacy

    • How messages travel: routers, IP, packets (via classroom “human network” game).
    • Email etiquette, strong passwords, spotting misinformation, cyber‑safety.
  • Spreadsheets & Multimedia Toolkit

    • Use spreadsheets for calculations and charts; integrate docs, slides, drawings, basic video clips into projects.
  • AI & Emerging Tech

    • What AI is and isn’t; hands‑on with a kid‑friendly machine‑learning tool or micro:bit sensors.
    • Robotics extensions: program a device responding to inputs (e.g., light sensor‑triggered LED).
  • Capstone Innovation Project

    • Option A: Software—multi‑level Python game or educational app.
    • Option B: Hardware—coded micro:bit/Arduino prototype (e.g., smart plant‑waterer).
    • Present at a “Tech Expo,” reflecting on the build–test–iterate cycle.

Real-World Applications

Use Cases – Where pupils can apply these skills

  • Academic enrichment: create data‑driven science reports, program quiz apps for revision.
  • Home projects: code a Python calculator, track household tasks in a spreadsheet.
  • Community & clubs: demo a micro:bit gadget at a school fair, contribute to coding competitions.
  • Next‑stage readiness: enter lower secondary able to script independently, understand computer internals, and navigate online spaces responsibly.
